ABOUT US

Mission:
Fit Muslimah Initiative seeks to motivate, educate and inspire Muslim women to lead healthier lives through being physically active and more informed and proactive about the health and wellbeing of themselves and their families.  Through online communities and live events Fit Muslimah will help Muslim women take definitive steps in the health and fitness industry.

Vision:
“A healthier Ummah one Muslimah at a time”

Community Impact:
The Fit Muslimah Initiative Project recognizes that women are the backbone of the family and the family is the foundation of society.  Through strengthening women we will strengthen society.  When women care for themselves, they take better care of others and can better benefit their families, friends and the communities as a whole. When Muslim women lead more healthy and fit lifestyles the entire Muslim community will benefit, Inshallah.

Our History
The Fit Muslimah Initiative began in New Haven CT in the spring of 2003 as the brain child of Mubarakah Ibrahim a local personal trainer and Muslimah.  She began hosting local “fun fitness” days for Muslim women by renting the local community center.  She would instruct a fitness class, give a workshop and the women would swim.  We only had one requirement for all of the activities, you had to MOVE!  That meant Scrabble was banned but Twister was welcomed.  The Pocketbook game was replaced with a contest of who could do the most push-ups and the recipes that were shared talked of replacing the white sugar and white flour in our favorite meals.  For 3 summers “fun fitness days” attracted Muslim women throughout Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts area, Alhumdullilah!

With a team of Muslim women throughout the U.S The Fit Muslimah Initiative began a revolutionary call for Muslim women to get us and get moving at the first Health and Fitness Summit for Muslim Women.  The Fit Muslimah Annual Health and Fitness Summit was an international calling for Muslim women to take steps towards improving their physical, mental and spiritual health.  We bought together over 250 Muslim women from 13 different states and Canada to share in 2 full days of fitness classes and health workshops.  From kickboxing and belly dancing to workshops on hypnotherapy and Qur’anic therapy, the wide range of health and fitness options allowed every attendant to “find their own path to wellness”.

Projects/Events
All Fit Muslimah projects and events will aim to motive, educate and inspire Muslim women about health and fitness.  Through this initiative we will gather knowledgeable and experienced health and fitness professionals, both Muslim and non-Muslim to educate Muslim women in the areas of health and fitness.
